Henry , a San Francisco businessman is rescued at sea by a British ship that takes him to London where he finds himself without money , friends or the hope of finding a good job. Hungry and alone , he walks the streets of the city when unexpectedly he is asked to a large and grand house , Two rich brothers , Roderick and Oliver , have made a secret bet . Roderick believes that a man cannot survive in the city for a month with only a million pound bank-note in his possession but Oliver believes he can . The play takes us along on Henry’s misadventures with humour and surprise to discover who will win the bet .
Purpose: This activity is designed to help Ss understand as much background about the play as possible .

Henry Adams:=
Proud : He earns his passage by working on a ship to England .
Careless :He arrived in England by accident after not sailing his boat well .
Hones : He asks for work not charity .
Rich : They have servants and do not to worry about giving a stranger a million pound bank-note .
Mischievous : They are prepared to bet one million pounds just for a bit of fun .
Good judges of character : They see that Henry is honest and proud .
Oliver and Roderick
Purpose: to train the Ss’ ability to make comments on characters in the play ..
